They all have their own structures, parameters, and outputs, and it is really hard to compare them or understand exactly what each one represents. I have heard about some standardisation efforts, but I am not sure how far along they are or whether they are actually useful for someone who just wants to work with the data. Is there a tool or framework that helps make sense of model descriptions and makes it easier to work across different models?
I had the same struggle until I came across an initiative that does exactly that. The project is called ES-DOC and you can check out the tools at earthsystemcog.org/ right there. It is an international effort to develop tools that describe Earth system models in a consistent way, so you can actually understand and compare them. The tools are based on the Common Information Model standard, which provides a structured way to document model components, variables, and metadata. This makes it much easier to work with model data across different research groups and projects. I have used their tools to get a clearer picture of what different models actually include and how they are configured, which has saved me a lot of time. If you work with climate models, this is definitely worth exploring.
